WHAT THE BIBLE TEACHES ABOUT MAN

THE FALL OF MAN

Rom. 5:12

It is only in the Word of God, that we find the true picture of man.

We noted in our last lesson that man was created by God, in the image and likeness of God.  These terms show man to be a triune being (three parts), consisting of a body, a soul, and a spirit.

1. With his SPIRIT, man is “God-conscious.”

2. With his SOUL, man is “self-conscious.”

3. With his BODY, man is “world-conscious.”

This was man’s state before he disobeyed God and fell into sin.

I. MAN VOLUNTARILY DISOBEYED GOD AND FELL INTO SIN

A. Adam was placed in the Garden of Eden with a choice of evil or good (Gen. 2:15-16).

B. Adam was warned by God not to eat the forbidden fruit (2:17).

C. Adam chose evil, and consequently fell from his original state of being innocent (Gen. 3:6-8).

II. AS A RESULT OF THE FALL, DEATH ENTERED THE HUMAN RACE

A. All men became sinners in Adam.

“Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned”(Rom. 5:12).

1. All are sinners (Rom. 3:10-12, 23)

2. The wages of sin is death (6:23).

3. Every man is condemned to die (5:12).

“Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned”(Rom. 5:12).

B. All died in Adam.

The death spoken of here is both spiritual and physical. Both are passed from Adam to all men.

1. The moment Adam sinned, he died spiritually—he lost “God-consciousness.”

2. Adam later died physically.

III. AS A RESULT OF THE FALL, MAN IS TOTALLY DEPRAVED

Since Adam’s sin, every man born into the human race is born with a DEAD spirit, and a DYING body, and a SOUL THAT IS IN DANGER OF BEING LOST.

Man’s entire nature is depraved.

This does not mean that man is as bad as he could be, but it does mean that every faculty of his being has been affected by sin.

A. Man is SPIRITUALLY DEAD (Eph. 2:1, 5).

1. Death means separation

a. Lost man is separated from God Who is life, and he has no contact with God.

b. His understanding is darkened and his heart is blinded to the things of God (Eph. 4:18).

2. Death means inability

a. The lost man is unconscious of God, and is unable to respond to the commands of God.

b. In himself, he has neither the desire nor the ability to obey God (Rom. 8:7-8).

B. Man is SELF-CENTERED.

1. He doesn’t care for the things of God (I Cor. 2:14).

2. Having no contact with God, the lost (natural) man is completely selfish and self-centered.

a. His will has been marred (Rom. 1:24).

- He can’t choose what is right.

b. His emotions are marred (1:26).

c. His intellect has been marred (1:28).

C. Man is DYING PHYSICALLY (Heb. 9:27).

1. The body is the seat of the Adamic nature (Rom. 7:23-24).

2. Even the believer still has a body with indwelling sin, which is to be endured until the rapture.

3. This is what Paul is referring to here in this portion of Scripture (7:15-25).

IV. JESUS CHRIST CAME TO REDEEM SINFUL MAN

A. We are saved by receiving Christ as our Lord and Savior (Acts 16:30-31; Rom. 10:9-10, 13).

B. Christ paid the sin-debt for those who call upon Him for salvation.

1. The sinner is saved by believing in the Christ who died, was buried and rose again from the dead (I Cor. 15:3-4).

2. Jesus Christ suffered for our sins, and He gives to us His perfect righteousness (II Cor. 5:21).

3. He bore out sins and we are healed by His stripes (I Pet. 2:24).
